Domestic Medium Hair - Black and white - Walter White - Medium
I wanted to include this wonderful boy's story as his rescuer knows it, as he has clearly been through a great deal prior to his arrival here on January 9th, xxxx. "One day in early fall of xxxx, three kids walked over from a nearby neighborhood to the stable where we board our horse in Byron Center. With them, was a long haired black and white cat. He appeared to be quite old and was skin and bones, his hair matted with dirt. They approached the barn manager and asked her if this was a cat that belonged to the barn. When she said 'no', the kids became upset; he stray that had been hanging around their neighborhood and their dad said that he would shoot the cat if it continued begging for food. The barn manager agreed to take the cat and feed it along with the other seven barn cats and see if he would stay. She and her assistant checked daily to see if he was still taking up residence, and he soon earned the nickname Waldo due to his coloring and because they were always checking to see where he was. He steered clear of the other barn cats, but was fed regularly by the barn staff. With no claws and a quiet disposition, he was often shooed away from the food bowl by other inhabitants. An older woman who boarded her horse at the barn was worried about this poor guy and began to bring canned food daily to fatten him up, trying to give him the attention he craved. He was obviously an indoor cat who either got dumped or ran away, and we were all worried about how he would do during the winter in the barn. We posted flyers around town and put a listing in the paper, but no one claimed him. We also contacted Crashs Landing, but at that time, they were full. When the weather began to turn cold we took a styrofoam cooler, cut a hole in its side, and filled it with soft fleece for a warm bed for him; we were happy he would crawl inside of it for shelter. In mid-December, the barn manager left the barn and soon after, the nice older lady who gave him attention decided to move on as well. With his regular support gone, my daughter and I tried to get to the barn as much as possible, but were worried about Waldo. With no claws, he was no match for the tougher barn cats and began to get picked on again, and had a hard time getting access to food around the other cats. We also worried that he wasnt getting enough water as his water bowl was always frozen. The weather took a sharp turn for the worse in January with wind chills down to -21 degrees. Waldo began to burrow deep into the hay in the hay room and would not come out to eat. Even when forced out, he would curl in a ball in the corner of the cooler, and refuse to eat or drink. The cold weather was just too much for a cat not used to being in such condition and we feared he was also severely dehydrated. Thankfully, when we contacted Crashs Landing for the second time, there was a spot available for him. We immediately went to get him to spend the night at our house before transporting him to Dr. Jen in the morning. Finally in a warm house, our kitty purred, ate a whole bowl of food, and drank water like he hadnt had any for weeks. I wish that we could have kept him, but we already have several cats at our home. We are so grateful that Crashs will be taking him and plan to sponsor Waldo and visit him regularly until he hopefully finds his forever home. He deserves it." We can only imagine how difficult it is for a cat to suddenly find himself in a situation so out of the norm for him, but luckily Walter fared well under the watchful eyes of many caring individuals. When I took him in on January 9th, I discovered that this gorgeous, gentle guy was probably only about 5 years old (born in early xxxx). He was suffering from a mild upper respiratory infection, was anemic and needed several rotting teeth pulled, but once he was treated, Walter was like a new cat! Not only did he bounce back, but he bounced on into his new indoor life with such vigor and enthusiasm, he seemed almost kitten-like. And in more comfortable surroundings, he also proved to be quite social and outgoing; now that
