I have seen some pretty gnarly, nasty cat bite abscesses in my day, but Lupe's face was as much of a fiasco as I have seen! I got a call at the clinic on Monday January 6, xxxx from a sweetheart of a gal on the west side of Grand Rapids who had come across this homeless 'headcase'. Unsure of what exactly was wrong with him, but knowing he needed help in a big way, she reached out to see if I could be of assistance. We spoke and agreed to get him out to the clinic ASAP, but a snowstorm that weekend literally left her stranded in her driveway. So, she set him up in her home and gave him some much needed tender loving care until she could dig her way out and bring him to me on the 7th. While her house guest, this fabulous four-year-old fella (born in early xxxx) allowed her to see his soft side, a gentle boy who loved kids, dogs and a warm lap. He also exhibited his easygoing ways, which really is a feat, considering his poor noggin was reaching epic proportions as it filled with pus! Once in my care, I was amazed by the sheer proportion of the left side of his face. Coated with oozing, sticky debris, it wasn't until I anesthetized him and surgically lanced the abscess that sweet relief was granted. I will be kind and spare you the pictures (available on request for those of you who have a medical interest in these cases), but suffice it to say, copious amounts of goo and grossness made its long overdue way out of his body and onto my table! Thankfully the staggering gait he possessed upon arrival resolved once his balance returned to normal, but his facial skin was in tatters; the wound literally shredded the skin of his cheeks down to the muscle. I was very worried that Lupe would ultimately lose half of his face. I made work of filling the wound defect with an ointment that promotes healing from the inside out, hit him hard with injectable antibiotics, and administered some much-meeded pain meds. Perseverance and a bit of luck paid off, as you can see by his photo that Lupe has healed like a champ; even a secondary shoulder wound is now non-existent! I expect a wee bit of facial scarring in the long run, but honestly, when the fur grows back fully, I bet you won't even be able to tell the trials and tribulations he endured as an intact tom cat out on the streets. After all that Lupe endured, there isn't a mean bone in his handsome, muscular body. He and Pinkman, another wayward soul from the mean streets, hung out together in the suite at the vet clinic, swapping stories and becoming pals. And once at our facility, he couldn't wait to be sprung from our intake room; he had places to go and people to see! There is nothing shy about this fabulous feline, nor is there anything that he can't overcome. He is an affable, affectionate, laid-back guy who would love nothing more than to be your sidekick, so fill out and application and get on down here to feast your eyes on our amazing Lupe!
