When we are in a position as a no-kill shelter to help out another rescue that doesn't have the same luxury as we do, we jump at the chance to do so. When our fabulous friend Karen from Allegan County/Wishbone alerted me to the plight of a dozen cats that more than likely meet an untimely demise due to lack of space, I took the opportunity to open our doors. Due to lack of foot traffic at their facility, sometimes the only exposure their adoptable cats get is by their on-line Petfinder posting, and they are so overwhelmed with cats that proper biographies can't be written; the only selling point of a cat becomes it's picture and age. And since they can't house their kitties in a free-roaming environment like we do, it can be difficult for them to really get to know the whimsical side of their kitties, so just the basic facts are known in most cases. I commend their staff for doing their absolute best with what they have to offer, as it is a daunting task that never ends as their intake rate far surpasses their adoption/placement rate. They have such a dedicated, caring staff that are advocating for their animals 24/7 that it brings tears to my eyes knowing all of these wonderful kitties have gotten a second and third chance at a better life because of their valiant efforts!
So, at the end of July, xxxx, I was over the moon to be able to welcome nine fabulous felines into our furry fold at Crash's. Since all of their cats had previously tested negative for Feleuk and FIV and we had the space, program readiness was easily obtained and transport to the vet clinic was easy as pie. I had the extreme pleasure of spending several days with the newbies at the clinic while I tended to any medical needs they may have had, updated vaccines and got to know each and every one of them. This bonding time was important to me, as I make it a point to get to know every cat we take in, and my one-on-one time is something that I cherish.
It goes without saying that each and every cat we took in seemed genuinely thrilled to be in new, open surroundings where the confines of a cage were a thing of the past. Each cat, in his or her own way, was one helluva happy camper when freedom was available, though a few were more shy about wandering out and about initially. Lynn, our cat care director summed up their first week with us: 'With almost off of these cats, you can see how they have become less desperate for attention and frantically seeking it out, to trusting that they will get attention and affection as a matter of course without having to demand it." She also gave me some of her own observations for each of our new residents, with Muffin (born in July of xxxx) being a bit unsure about having so many other cats in close proximity. Get this gorgeous gray and white girl away from the commotion though, and she becomes putty in your hands. Ideally I think landing Muff a home of her own, or at least one with only another cat or two tops, would suit her best.
It is easy to see how a cat on the shy side would easily get overlooked in a place that boasted bigger and more exuberant puursonalities, so allowing this sweetheart to settle in and acclimate in her new surroundings will be a huge benefit. Since there are no time limitations at Crash's, Muffin can take it easy and relax, discovering at her own pace all of the creature comforts we have to offer and reveling in her new found freedom; the possibilities for her are now endless:)
