In May of xxxx, Chris Summers from Lafayette, Indiana, found herself and a stunning stray she was caring for in quite a predicament: he tested positive for both Feline Leukemia and FIV. Ethically, she knew she could not put him back outdoors, but she wasn't in a position to bring him inside with her four cats. And, thankfully it was out of the question to euthanize in her opinion. Not being a native Michigander, the cat didn't really qualify for our intake program, but the woman was so nice and had gone above and beyond for this cat she was head over heels in love with, that I immediately put her in touch with someone who could help us both. I got to know Sarah Reece awhile back when she herself contacted me about taking in some Indiana born-and-raised cats to our sanctuary, and since Purdue was my alma mater and Lafayette was very near and dear to my heart, we worked out an arrangement. Sarah is a vet tech, so she would get any cat in need fully vetted, and I would place him on our intake list; when the time came to take him in, she would make the 3-1/2 hour trip up Grand Rapids. This time around it was me contacting her for help, and she was more than happy to do so, hooking up with Chris and an over-the-top affectionate orange tabby named Steve.
Sarah housed Steve with her and had all of his medical needs taken care of at Petsburgh Pet Care (shout out!) until Big Sid's was finally able to accommodate him on July 30th. He made the trip without a care in the world, and purred up a storm the minute I laid eyes on him - and I don't think he has stopped since! I call cats like Steve 'purr machines' as once they rev up their engines and get their motors running, you can't shut them off (not that you would want to!) I tell ya what, this is pure music to my ears and something that I never take for granted! Give him a lap and a few minutes of your undivided attention, and he turns into pussycat putty!
Born in May of xxxx, we aren't quite sure how this handsome, hunky cat ended up on his own, but being an intact male was what led him to acquire not one, but both viruses. Although quite a feat in itself, we do see this more often than you would think, sadly, but we have the ways and means to accommodate these kitties without a second thought. No matter to the strapping 14 pound fella either, as he is as sturdy and solid as a furry little Mack truck, but gentle as a lamb, a bit on the shy side at first, and as sweet as spun sugar. I really can't gush enough about this marvelous cat, nor can I thank the two ladies involved in getting him off the beaten path and into a sanctuary set up to cater to his every whim.
Life with us will be grand for Steve, but life WITH Steve will be even grander for us!
