I can't divulge the personal circumstances that surrounded senior sweetie Debras return to Crash's in August of xxxx, but suffice it to say they were beyond her control. I commend her mom for having the fortitude to relinquish custody back to me knowing that she could not longer afford her girl the care she needed, given the situation she found herself in. It was heartbreaking for goodbyes to have to be said, but thankfully their parting, although gut-wrenching, wasn't permanent; Debra was in dire straits but would not have to be euthanized. Her mom and I agreed that me taking responsibility of her medical care would be Debra's best chance, so she signed her over and I immediately got to work righting all that was wrong with her. Although I was Debra's vet since her arrival on my birthday in xxxx, I hadn't seen her in well over a year, and even back then, she wasn't the substantial, solid chunk of a girl she had been in years past. Plagued with a chronic herpes virus infection, her eyes tended to weep and collect matter, but it was her weight loss that had me concerned. At that time, she was acting as silly and sassy as ever, so her mom opted to monitor her. However, when she came back to me this August, she was emaciated at 5.75# (she was 11# at her heaviest and healthiest), was barely able to stand and or walk, hadn't been able to eat for several days and was suffering from pure liquid diarrhea. It shattered my heart to watch her hug the wall in order to tread without falling over, her head tilting so far to the left she toppled more often than not. Extensive diagnostics revealed what I suspected was the cause of her balance issues - an otitis media, or middle ear infection - along with a chronic case of untreated IBD, or inflammatory Bowel Disease. Within days of flushing out her ear canal and getting steroids and antibiotics on board, little Miss Debra was able to trek around the room without face planting on the floor, and her sloppy squirts had subsided. She was also eating baby food with voraciousness and her vitality was returning to her little by little: baby steps progressed to a full blown confident stride within a week of her arrival! Although Debra, who was born in April of xxxx) lived with two large dogs and several other cats over the years, it took her awhile to get used to her new surroundings and 100 frisky feline roomies. It was her need for human attention that got her tottering around, following the volunteers and making the rounds with them. Several of our staff members remember Debra from days gone by, so their reunions have been just what she needed to get back on her feet again, literally! She is eager to make your acquaintance, and everyone has been impressed with her strength and stamina, along with the gumption and drive it takes to overcome as many issues as she has. I am beyond appreciative that I was given the chance to help an old furry friend out quite the medical mess and make her part of our family once again. At this point, I am unsure if the head tilt will be long-lasting, but it really doesn't matter as it isn't fazing our exuberant girl any! I will be sure to keep everyone updated as time goes on, and assure you all that darling Debra is on the mend, well on her way to a road of recovery!
