Domestic Short Hair - White - Olympia - Medium - Adult - Female
In mid-August, xxxx, Alto resident Amanda P. literally rescued this adorable alabaster girl from traffic in an intersection. Upon getting her home, she realized that she had not escaped injury, apparently having been struck by a car and damaging her right rear leg. She housed her in her garage, or a crate in her home, hoping that in time her injury would heal. She contacted us a few days later and made an appointment with a local vet to have her checked out at our recommendation (I was going out of town); when I returned the kitty still hadn't received medication attention do to scheduling issues, so we made work of getting her in to see me. Upon arrival, it was painfully obvious that the trauma sustained by tangling with a moving vehicle had snapped her leg in two, and x-rays confirmed a broken femur. However, the injury at this time was two weeks old, and since she had been holding the leg up for the most part, the muscles contracted and froze in flexion. Our pearly white princess (born in the summer of xxxx) could hobble on her limb, but it would not ever be fully functional. And given the location of the break, the only way to rectify the situation was to amputate the leg. In prepping her for surgery, I noted that she hadn't been spayed, and had in fact given birth to a litter, probably earlier in the spring as evidenced by the bronzing of her nipples. So not only did I have to removed her appendage, but also her reproductive tract as well. Thankfully her pre-op lab work was all normal, and Olympia cruised through her dual surgeries without incident. Needless to say she was a bit miffed when she awoke, missing parts and all, but narcotics and canned food won her over, and by the next day, she was ambulatory and acclimating to her new life as a tripod. By the following day she was wandering around the clinic, putting a little pep in her triple-step, and grumbling at the other kitties she encountered. She is sweet, but she can be a sass too; after all she has been through, no one blames her! Once at the shelter, we set her up in a room with two of our other recovering kitties, where they proceeded to hiss at each other, but nothing more than that. In time we have no doubts that she will grow quite fond of her feline roommates, as she is extremely social and interested in her surroundings. Human companionship is at the top of her wish list though, as she thoroughly envelops herself in the warm embrace of the doting volunteers who are more than happy to baby her. She has impressed us with her athletic abilities, not letting her loss of a limb slow her down in any way and hurdling any obstacles that comes her way with ease and grace. She is an amazing little cat whom we couldn't be happier to call a Crash Cat - our very own gold medalist with a gregarious, outgoing attitude and a spunk that will propel her onward and upward! She knows no limits and won't let anything stand in her way of accomplishing her goal of belonging to a family. Olympia definitely has her eye on the prize and we are going to do everything in our power to help her claim it! **Update 9-26-14** Our eagle-eye volunteer Kristi H. noted that our girl was having a bit of difficulty producing urine and when she did eliminate, it was blood-tinged. So she brought her out to the clinic where I diagnosed her with FIC, or Feline Idiopathic Cystitis. She will be on canned food daily, long-term, as well as anti-inflammatories on an as needed basis when her bladder condition flare-ups. Odd thing to note: upon examining her x-ray, I noted that not only does Olympia have only one rear leg, but she only boasts a single kidney as well! Not a big concern, as the kidney she does have is in perfect working order, but an interesting finding nonetheless.
